Faculty Position Announcement: Associate Dean for Educational Programs and Student Services

Associate Dean for Educational Programs and Student Services

The School of Social Work at The University of Alabama seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Educational Programs and Student Services.  This will be a twelve month tenured or tenure-earning appointment.  We seek applicants with an M.S.W. and Ph.D. in social work or a closely related field.  Applications will be accepted until position is filled.

The Associate Dean provides administrative assistance to the Dean and is deputized to act in place of the Dean when the Dean is away from campus.  The Associate Dean works in collaboration with other administrators in the School, and with faculty, staff, and students to carry out the School’s mission and goals. 

The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean and directs the Office of Student Services and the Office of the Registrar.  The Associate Dean provides oversight for the B.S.W., M.S.W., and Ph.D. programs; the Field Education Office; Continuing Education programs; and adjunct faculty appointments. 

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the dean in strategic planning, in collaboration with other administrators and faculty.
  • Assist the dean, administrators, and faculty in the review, development, and revision of curricular and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Oversee workload distributions among the faculty and coordinate course scheduling activities.
  • Assist the dean in the conduct of School of Social Work faculty annual reviews.
  • Coordinate mentoring of junior faculty.
  • Oversee and develop charges for faculty and staff committees; coordinate activities between and among program committees and curricular and policy workgroups.
  • Oversee ongoing review and development of Field Education policies and procedures, in collaboration with the Field Coordinator and the Field Advisory Committee.
  • Hire and evaluate adjunct faculty in collaboration with Program Chairs, the Field Coordinator, and the Adjunct Advisory Committee.
  • Hire and evaluate adjunct field liaisons in collaboration with Program Chairs, the Field Coordinator (review and approve Field Coordinator’s recommendations).
  • Prepare or coordinate the development of  internal and external reports, handbooks, and other documents,  including the CSWE annual statistical report; accreditation reports; handbooks for Faculty and Staff; Students; and Field Education; and updates of the Graduate and Undergraduate Catalogs.
  • Coordinate program evaluation to provide an evidence base for program improvement and to meet CSWE and SACS accreditation requirements and coordinate the overall accreditation processes.
  • Direct student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Oversee student orientation, advising, registration, and graduation procedures and documentation.
  • Coordinate student scholarships and financial aid.
  • Serve as the Dean’s designee in such student issues as academic misconduct, sexual harassment, grade appeals, and exceptions to academic policies.
  • Represent the School and the Dean on community, University, and School committees as assigned by the Dean.
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned by the Dean.
  • The Associate Dean may teach, no more than one course per semester, depending upon other assignments. 

We seek candidates who have:

  • An impressive program of scholarship in social work or a closely related field in an area congruent with the needs of the School.
  • Successful experience with mentoring graduate students and junior faculty members.
  • Administrative experience in higher education involving program planning, curriculum development and monitoring students’ progress.
  • Success in obtaining external support.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education and research.

The University of Alabama (approximately 25,000 students) is located in Tuscaloosa, a moderate-sized city with excellent quality of life characteristics.  It is within easy driving distance of Birmingham, New Orleans, Atlanta, the Smoky Mountains and Gulf Coast beaches.  The School of Social Work enrolls approximately 500 students in its B.S.W., M.S.W. and doctoral programs.
